Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
