Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Technology to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Western Forces, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned confidential technology allowing the Taliban to locate Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's response of a catastrophic leak of private information involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.

How the Leak Was Discovered

An electronic document with confidential details, including identities, contact details and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at special operations center in last year.

The incident became known months later, when identities of several individuals who had requested to settle in the UK surfaced on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Should they obtain a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. This is exactly how specialized teams did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings provided to the inquiry indicated that approximately fifty relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the incident was enacted in late 2023 and restricted any information regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the volunteer organization she collaborated with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved when possible and altered their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities obtained such data, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The source contested that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the dataset by the Taliban was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained terrible abuse suffered by at-risk Afghans, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
