Rare Red Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Heavens

A group of photography enthusiasts in New Zealand have recorded visual evidence of red lightning, among the most elusive celestial events globally, in which glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists initially planned to capture the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be fortunate to get good weather that night, but their shooting session transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer commented.

While reviewing his files for a stellar landscape and realized he had captured scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer noted. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and various reactions in the dark.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, generated by electrical storms. Differing from lightning that strikes downward to the earth, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, producing appearances that look like vertical forms, carrots or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a such an event was captured – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a group at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking straight toward one when it took place – just a perfect coincidence looking at the right part of the firmament and I witnessed a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Observing the occurrences was a goal for the photographer, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It seems that you witness an impossible sight, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is visible for an instant, so it’s really interesting to witness.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Capturing a red sprite demands a mastery of advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, he explained. “It is a deeply engaging category of art that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

One of the other individuals said it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I witnessed the Milky Way shining above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination swayed above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he described.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no other images capturing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are observing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
