A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.

The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants domestically and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna brings a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a regular participant at the annual January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price soared before you knew it."

This new purchase exceeds his own historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter processed for customers at the winner's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've started the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one elated patron.
