Forecasters have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," said the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, meaning warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Readings Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was expected to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
