Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World
The winter game drop for Minecraft has landed — and it brings with it the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem drop also incorporates several new features and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the development team had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack excellently designed for it.
"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and get increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] perfect for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport immediately.
Another significant inclusion in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This underwater creature, which is inspired by the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for a breath.
The other inclusions are primarily things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've long considered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for underwater," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while riding a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the best defense it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
In summary, the final game drop of the year is a solid offering. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
