Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired offerings can be seen as somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, together, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, although the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Treasures

These gifts are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The query centered on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
