Britain Set to Utilize Seized Russia's Holdings to Finance Ukraine's War Effort
The UK is prepared to move forward with using the total value of seized Russia's funds to bolster the Ukrainian war effort, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a joint statement, the officials of the Britain, the French Republic, and Germany emphasized that this coordinated action would heighten pressure on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and urge Moscow to engage in negotiations.
They clarified that the decision would be executed in tight collaboration with the United States.
British restrictions have blocked in excess of £25bn of Russia's funds since the Russian government initiated its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. But, up to this point, money allocated to Ukraine using Russia's assets had exclusively been sourced from gains and dividends generated on them.
Sir Keir assured Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were united in their aim to drive progress toward utilizing the full value of the immobilized Russian sovereign holdings to end the war.
He noted that further measures over the next period would heighten the tension on Russia.
This declaration comes after EU representatives met in the Danish capital last week to discuss utilizing seized Russian holdings for a €140bn loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, President Donald Trump encouraged international partners to seize or employ frozen Russia's funds, based on news outlets.
The total of seized Russia's holdings in the EU is estimated to be almost €211bn.
Leader Zelensky urges UK's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
Moscow carried out extensive missile and drone strikes all over the Ukrainian territory on that day, causing electricity outages in large parts of the capital city, the city, and eight other regions.
Several persons were lost their lives and no fewer than 20 people were wounded in the assault, authorities in Ukraine reported.
In a update on X subsequent to the incident, Zelensky commented that the strategic strike aimed at public and utility structures.
"What is required is not mere statements but firm measures - from the United States, Europe, and the G7 - in supplying defense mechanisms and enforcing restrictions," he emphasized.
"All penalty impositions undermines Russia's war machine," Zelensky noted, in a additional update.
Additionally that day, Zelensky informed reporters he would encourage Sir Keir to join the Purl program, under which Nato countries buy arms from the United States to give to the Ukrainian forces.
While commending the Britain's firm backing for Kyiv, he said it should demonstrate clearly that it would participate in the program, as well as enforce more sanctions on Russia.
