At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Organized Crime
At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 suspects were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials said no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Community members have likened the hillside area - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.
Mission Context
The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a extended probe.
Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
Wider Perspective
Extensive security missions are frequent in the country ahead of major international events in the nation.
The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the northern urban center in November.
